EUCALYPTUS
Eucalyptus
WHAT IS EUCALYPTUS?
-
Eucalyptus is a fast-growing evergreen tree native to Australia. Its leaves and oil contain many different chemicals. These chemicals might have various effects in the body. Also, some research suggests that eucalyptus may have activity against bacteria and fungi.
-
There are over 400 different species of eucalyptus. Eucalyptus globulus, also known as Blue Gum, is the main source of eucalyptus oil used globally.
-
Leaves are steam distilled to extract the oil, which is a colorless liquid with a strong, sweet, woody scent. It contains 1,8-cineole, also known as eucalyptol. The leaves also contain flavonoids and tannins; flavonoids are plant-based antioxidants, and tannins may help to reduce inflammation.

HEALTH BENEFITS

-
Studies yield that eucalyptus is one of the most effective herbs to cleanse the lungs. Its eucalyptol property helps kill the bacterial infection that causes lung congestion. Then, its anti-inflammatory property is also beneficial for soothing and relieving the pain caused by coughing.
-
As an ingredient in many products, it is used to reduce symptoms of coughs, colds, and congestion. It also features in creams and ointments aimed at relieving muscle and joint pain. Also, some research suggests that eucalyptus may have activity against bacteria and fungi.

-
Children: People often consume eucalyptus as a flavoring in small amounts in foods. But it is likely unsafe for children to take eucalyptus oil by mouth, apply it to the skin, or inhale it. There are reports of seizures and other nervous system side effects in infants and children who were exposed to eucalyptus oil.
-
Cross-allergenicity: Some people who are allergic to other essential oils might also be allergic to eucalyptus oil.
-
Surgery: Since eucalyptus might affect blood sugar levels, there is concern that it might make blood sugar control difficult during and after surgery. Stop using eucalyptus at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.
