What is COVID-19?

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the
SARS-CoV-2 virus.

It can trigger what doctors call a respiratory tract infection. It can affect your upper respiratory tract (sinuses, nose, and throat) or lower respiratory tract (windpipe and lungs).

According to Jose A. Pando, Medical director of the Lewes Wellness Center,  Patients infected with this virus experience an acute, life-threatening respiratory damage caused by an overproduction of cytokines, which are hormone-like molecules produced by the immune system.

The virus was originated in bats and human transmission primarily occurs through contact with infected people through infected secretions such as respiratory secretions, saliva or through respiratory droplets that are expelled when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks.

In early 2020, after a December 2019 outbreak in Wuhan, China, the World Health Organization identified SARS-CoV-2 as a new type of coronavirus. The outbreak quickly spread around the world.

HOW TO PREVENT COVID-19?

  • Maintain a safe distance from others (at least 1 metre), even if they don’t appear to be sick.

  • Wear a mask in public, especially indoors or when physical distancing is not possible.

  • Choose open, well-ventilated spaces over closed ones. Open a window if indoors.

  • Clean your hands often. Use soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand rub.

  • Get vaccinated when it’s your turn. Follow local guidance about vaccination.

  • Cover your nose and mouth with your bent elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

  • Stay home if you feel unwell.
